Brakes

Brakes are one of the most important safety features in your car, especially during high-stress situations. If you are having problems with your brakes, it is important to bring your vehicle in right away so we can identify the problem and fix it quickly.

The brake system consists of multiple components that work together to slow down or stop the vehicle when needed. By allowing certain parts to wear out over time, the risk for accidents increases. Many different types of brakes work in separate ways but function collectively for all cars within different categories. Although every part has an estimated lifespan, wear and tear vary depending on factors such as how often you drive and what kind of terrain you travel on. Most automobile manufacturers specify guidelines for regular inspections to prevent further damage and the need for more expensive repairs.

There are several common signs of brake issues:

  • The car failing to stop promptly
  • The steering wheel shakes when applying brakes
  • Vibrations or grinding noises when braking
  • Car pulling to one side during braking

When you spot these signs and bring your vehicle to us, we will inspect all parts that might be an issue and determine if further diagnosis or immediate replacement of components is needed. There are four main types of common brake services:

  • Brake pad installation
  • Brake rotor resurfacing
  • Brake drum machining/repairing
  • Hydraulic cylinder repair/replacement.

The most common service we may suggest is pad installation. Brake pads are the part of the brake system that makes contact with your car's discs, or rotors when you press your foot on the brake pedal. Pads are manufactured using different materials such as ceramic, semi-metallic, and organic. It is common to need new pads after anywhere from 12,000-30,000 miles because all brakes wear down over time. The brake pad installation cost will depend on whether you also need a rotor resurfacing at the same time.

We may also recommend rotor machining to maintain smooth braking and prevent future damage to other components due to excess dust and heat generated by metal grinding against metal for extended periods.

It is a good idea to get your brakes checked regularly, so we can deal with any problems before your vehicle becomes dangerous.

Power Steering Flush

Power steering is a system that helps drivers steer their vehicles more easily by using hydraulic power to assist them. Although this makes driving much easier, it also has many parts and components that can wear down over time if not properly maintained and checked at regular intervals. The most common problem with power steering systems is the fluid levels becoming too low or dirty due to normal use or neglecting scheduled check-ups.

You can tell if your power steering fluid needs to be replaced if you notice the following things:

  • Noise or vibrations while turning the wheel
  • Vehicle pulling to one side during a turn
  • Symptoms of overheating while braking

Our power steering flush service clears out the old fluid and brings in the new, clean fluid to ensure an efficient system. This process also removes small particles of dirt and rubber as well as microscopic metal shavings from wearing down the inside of your system. It generally takes around thirty minutes depending on how dirty your fluid may be.

Spark Plugs

Problems with your spark plugs are very common. If you notice any of the following, you need your spark plugs checked:

  • Your car is not starting
  • Your vehicle shakes when accelerating
  • Your vehicle vibrates while idling
  • You notice blue smoke coming from the exhaust pipe
  • Your engine is difficult to star

If you find yourself needing new spark plugs, it generally means that the ones currently installed have worn down over time or were damaged.

One of the most difficult tasks with changing out spark plugs is reaching all areas inside your engine. We will often need to remove other parts to provide full access to each one's location. When installing new spark plugs, we can also replace any gaskets needed if they appear damaged or dirty.

Failing to replace your spark plugs can lead to all sorts of problems like unreliable starting, loss of power, and worse, so don't ignore the signs of a problem.

Fuel and Oil Filter Replacements

It is very important to change your fuel and oil filters regularly. We will recommend a filter replacement after a certain number of miles, or if we notice that the current filters are dirty or clogged with debris from outside contaminants. Manufacturers also provide guidelines for how often you should change your filters. Make sure you check these recommendations and follow them if you want your vehicle to stay in good condition.

When your filters need replacing, you may notice:

  • A drop in gas mileage
  • Unusual odours from the exhaust
  • Reduced power when accelerating

The fuel and oil filter changes vary based on the vehicle type, but generally don't take very long for a complete service once the car has been lifted to provide access. Failing to replace your filters can lead to problems like your engine failing to start, problems with your fuel pump, and contamination of your oil that will damage internal components.
